ABSTRACT: Soil and
climatic conditions found in Northwest Spain are adequate for the development
of plant species native to tropical and subtropical areas. Subsequently, an
increasing demand on these exotic species by both individuals and nurseries has
been reported. Thus, attempts on the propagation of these non- native tree
ferns were performed but proved to be unsuccessful. The Estación
Fitopatológica de Areeiro carried out several assays on Cyathea
cooperi and Dicksonia antartica in vitro culture techniques more
than 20 years ago. During the last years there was an increasing interest of
several nurseries on this species. This technique was thus reinitiated to
improve the species production at a large scale to be subsequently transferred
to private companies. Micropropagation is performed using spores obtained from
mature fronds, which after being disinfected on the surface are sown in UNE # B
liquid medium (Fossard, 1976). All first stages of development take place in
test tubes. Once the spores germinate, the phrotallus will emerge in the
culture medium. After fertilization, sporophyte develop and when 3 -4 fronds
are formed, they are transferred to pots. 100 ml. pots filled with a 1: 1
perlite and peat mix are placed in acclimatization chambers with the optimum
temperature, humidity and photoperiod. Spores germination reported was higher
than 70%, and fronds acclimatization stage obtained 100 % success.
