ABSTRACT: The area Ancares- O Courel is a wide green area situated along South-eastern Lugo. It has an important range of native tree species, among them Betula celtiberica, Quercus robur, Quercus pyrenaica, Sorbus aucuparia, Fagus sylvatica or Erica australis. In may 2008, we detected an area defoliated by the geometrid Agriopis aurantiaria, mainly affecting Betula celtiberica species, although in June, at chrysalis stage, it was also found damaging other species, estimating the area affected in 30 hectares. In 2007 defoliation was observed again, beginning at the end of April, and with the highest larval density reached in May, when the affected area is proximate to 500 ha.
The present work gives a description of the species and the damages it produces. The results of a control assay performed at the laboratory with a biological insecticide are also provided.
