ABSTRACT: The Botanic Garden in Porto is located in the Quinta de Campo Alegre, where we can find hedges being more than 4 m high, planted at the end of 19th century to protect other cultures and gardens from the wind. These camellia hedges are composed by more than 500 Camellia japonica specimens. For more than 20 years, this garden has been neglected and many plants were deteriorated or lost. The garden and their camellias were finally restored in 2001, after several previous attempts. The identification of the camellias was initiated in the 80s. In this work, on the basis of previous identifications and using Camellia morphobotanic descriptors and bibliographic documents dating from the 19th and 20th centuries, the camellias growing in this garden were identified. From a total of 545 specimens growing in the garden, 27 of the specimens previously identified were confirmed, identifying 49 more belonging to 40 cultivars of C. japonica and one to C. reticulata.
