ABSTRACT: The camellia is a unique and invaluable Galician product, which reflects the emotional and symbolic values of the hidden language of the Galician gardens. These gardens meet the idea of evocation, mystery, and legend that the tourist has of the Galician land. Camellias were introduced in the nineteenth century in the gardens of the Galician nobility, being them unaffordable for the rest of the social classes. Since the middle of the twentieth century these plants have become popular and could be found in all the gardens and streets of Galicia. In this paper, we present the results of the survey conducted in the Galician Gardens until 2011 whose aim was to catalog both the camellias and those specimens belonging to other species of botanical, historical and cultural interest to create a tourist route in the winter gardens, the Galician camellia route, turning the camellia into a symbol of our cultural identity within the tourism brand Galicia.
