  Arabis mosaic virus DETECTION IN SPAIN.

ArMV symptoms on bunch Arabis mosaic virus (ArMV, genus Nepovirus, familyComoviridae) is together with Fan leaf virus (GFLV), among the European Nepovirus resposible for the Infectious degeneration of grapes.

It mainly affects Central Europe vineyards and so far it had not been reported in Spain. However, since this virus mainly occurs in cold climates it was thought the pathogen could extend to northern Spain. This virus was first reported in Spain, in the Autonomous Community of Galicia, affecting two vineyards belonging to the Designation of origin Rías Baixas, in summer 2007. These vineyards belonging to the variety ‘Albariño’ showed leaves with mosaics, yellowing and the fungus also developed on bunches. Its insect vector Xiphinema diversicaudatum (Nematoda: Longidoridae) was also identified. In Spring 2008 it was detected again in the Basque Country affecting the variety ‘Tempranillo’ vineyards belonging to the designation of origin Rioja. Affected plants did not present specific leaf symptoms but it affected the fruit during fruit set. ArMV epidemiology is linked to the presence of X. diversicaudatum, polyphagous nematode that can transmit the virus to different hosts from woody to grass plants.

This disease, together with the main grapevine virus is regulated by the Technical Regulations of Control and Certification of Nursery Grapevine plants (Royal Decree 208/2003 dating 21st February and Order APA/ 2474/2006 dating 27th July), with the aim to select certified plant material, free from this important virus.
