DETECTION OF Phytophthora alni subsp. alni IN SPAIN.

A new species of Phythophthora was identified at a morphological, physiological and molecular level for the first time on Agnus in Spain: Phytophthora alni subsp. alni Brasier & S.A. Kirk (Plant disease, 94(2): 273)

In July 2009, the EFA detects Phytophthora alni subsp. alni, on a sample of alder from the riverside of the Avia river with decaying symptoms. This is a very aggresive Phythophthora species causing root and collar rot in several Alnus species growing in forests near the riverside. The fungus has been reported in several European countries, causing important damages in the United Kingdom. However, it had not yet been identified in Spain so far, although its symptoms: small, scarce and yellow leaves, exudate in the low trunk being two or three meters long have been reported in alders growing in the seaside of several rivers of the Cantabrian coast.

After an extensive survey in Galicia, the pathogen has been detected in the four Galician provinces.
