Phytophthora pseudosyringae DETECTED IN GALICIA ON CHESTNUT TREE

A new Phytophthora species was morphologically, physiologically and molecularly detected for the first time on chestnut in Spain: Phytophthora pseudosyringae (Plant disease, 91(11): 1517).

Symptoms on chestnut are observed along the trunk, which shows slightly sunken black necrotic areas, which in some cases converge producing a more extensive necrosis. In addition, buds and shoots dry when meeting with those affected areas

In Europe, P. pseudosyringae was not identified on chestnut yet, but it was reported in forestry soils, where several Quercus species are growing, and was also isolated on necrotic roots and on the trunk base of Fagus sylvatica and Alnus glutinosa, and so far it was identified in Italy, France and Germany. In USA it was also isolated on Umbellularia californica and Quercus agrifolia (EPPO Report 2005/162).
