EDAPHOLOGY-SOIL ANALYSIS

Soil analysis has to be carried out by the customer. Special attention should be paid to this task since the soil is a heterogeneous media. In the appendix 1 a general sampling scheme is attached. The first 5 cm of soil must be discarded. For most cultures, samples taken from the soil surface up to 20-40 cm below the ground are enough to perform the soil analysis. For lawn and meadows, samples from 5 to 10 cm depth are recommended. On the other hand, in those cultures having deep roots and fruit trees, soil samples must be taken from 30 to 60 cm depth.
i) The cultivable layer of the soil should be sampled, since it is subjected to most amendments and fertilizers and it has been modified by previous labour.
ii) Analyzed soil samples must be representative of the area in which the roots are feeding; from soil surface up to 20 to 30 cm below ground.
iii) Sometimes it is necessary to take the sample sub-superficially- from 30 to 60 cm. to know the potential capacity of the soil.

How much soil will be needed to perform the analysis? This is the most frequent query made by the customers at our laboratory. From 500 to 1000 grams will be enough to perform all the soil testing (appendix 2. But this sample should be taken from a higher soil quantity, mixed in a large container.
